The core difference
A manual louvered pergola uses a hand-operated mechanism—usually a crank—to change the louver angle. A motorized pergola uses powered motors and controls, commonly a remote and sometimes an app or smart-home integration.
Manual pergolas: when they make sense
- You want to keep purchase cost down.
- You do not expect to change the roof position frequently.
- You prefer fewer powered components.
- Smart-home integration is not important to you.

Motorized pergolas: what the extra money buys
- Push-button roof adjustment.

Questions to ask before choosing motorized
Check how power reaches the pergola, whether each combined module needs its own connection, what happens during a power failure, motor and electrical warranty terms, and whether app/smart-home features depend on a separate controller or service.
Motorized does not automatically mean “better.” If your priority is price and you only adjust the louvers occasionally, manual may be the better fit.
