Freestanding pergolas
A freestanding pergola carries itself on its own posts. That can simplify placement away from the house and avoids attaching the pergola directly to the building envelope, but it still requires an appropriate foundation or supporting structure.
Attached or wall-mounted pergolas
Wall-mounted systems can reduce the number of posts along the house side and integrate closely with a patio or doorway. They also introduce important flashing, attachment, structural and permitting questions at the house connection.
Not every model supports both
This can be a hard product-selection filter. FlexPatio currently lists POWER+ Gen 2 as freestanding, while POWER+ PRO Gen 2 offers freestanding or wall-mounted configurations. Always verify the exact model rather than assuming a brand supports both.
Questions to resolve before buying
- Do you actually want the pergola structurally attached to the house?
- Is the desired product approved by the manufacturer for that configuration?
- What foundation or attachment does the manufacturer require?
- Will doors, windows, gutters or rooflines conflict?
- What does your local jurisdiction require?
